In Matthew 28, as He was preparing to return to His Father, Jesus told His followers to go into all the world to make disciples. In Acts 1:8, we are told to begin where we are in our City and from there to our Country and our World. Jesus showed us the way by preaching and teaching the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ, and by loving and caring for and healing the people He met.

Some of us at The MET have been asking ourselves, “Are we having a tangible effect on the felt needs in our City? Are we being all that God has called the Church to be? Are we reaching out to the pressing needs in the broken margins of our community? Six years ago, our METCompassion Team began to pray together, and to brainstorm and to begin to take steps forward. From these small beginnings has come City Outreach.

Today City Outreach is a MET ministry that seeks to mobilize MET people to take the Good News of Jesus Christ outside our church walls and to the streets of Ottawa, our beautiful city, where so many are lost, and hurting and in desperate need of the Good News that there is a Saviour, who is reaching out to them.

So we have MET teams that go to BRITANNIA WOODS (Ritchie St.) where there are 200 units of mostly single-parent refugee families, each with many children and there we partner with Britannia Baptist Church. We pray with the leaders there, help teach Sunday School, lead women's and men's Bible studies. We provide a big Christmas party, inviting hundreds into our Fellowship Centre for music and gifts and to hear the wonderful Christmas story. MET families are beginning to link lives with families in this community, sharing ongoing friendship and care. And it is a mutual benefit, because we have much to learn from these dear people.

We have a BRIDGES ministry that provides a healthy meal, and worship, a devotional message and friendship to people living in poverty in the downtown core.

We help provide BACKPACKS for needy children and WINTER CLOTHING for children and adults without adequate means, remembering that Jesus said that we do for the least of these, his brothers, we do for Him.

City Outreach began a sports ministry at BRITANNIA WOODS this summer, with a basketball camp we called HOOP NIGHTS, reaching out to teens growing up in environment infiltrated with crime…teens who so desperately need love, and mentoring, and to hear about the hope we have in Jesus Christ.

City Outreach now reaches into group homes where the mentally ill live lonely and marginalized lives, and bring love and the joy that comes from knowing our Saviour. As we partner with MALTA (a ministry begun with the Ernst family) many have come to faith and had their lives transformed through a Bible study held for them in our Fireside Room, and through special events like our summer BBQ celebration.

City Outreach expresses love and concern for the elderly confined to SENIORS RESIDENCES. Some folks living there follow Christ, but can no longer get out to church. Others used to go to church and are open to the message of Jesus. Still others will come because of the music and the friendship we offer. City Outreach teams currently bring monthly worship services to 4 seniors residences, and Bible Studies to several others. But there are 65 seniors’ residences in our community. There is much opportunity and work to be done.

Unity is at the heart of God’s plan for us, as we partner with our brothers and sister in other churches to share Christ with our city. THE BIG GIVE, the free garage sale, is an example of partnering with dozens of other churches to love people in Jesus' name. City Outreach will continue to seek out these spiritual partnerships. We thank God for One Way Ministries and Love Ottawa that work tirelessly to bring churches together to touch our City with the love and Good News of Jesus.

But all of this is just a beginning. This year we pray we can begin a ministry in the DETENTION CENTRE. We pray that our outreach to the elderly, to the poor and to the marginalized with be blessed by God with multiplied growth. We want to be the hands and feet of Jesus on the streets of our City in a long-term, sustainable, high impact way.

Will you join in where God is leading us? Today we have a few teams. And people are turning to Christ. Imagine what could happen if many more MET families took part? There is a place for everyone...children, teens, young adults, and adults.

Please! Come…be a part of what God is doing in our City.
