Meet Our Deacons

Role of Deacons

The role of the deacons is simply to be servants of the church. The word deacon comes from the Greek word diakonos, which means servant. The New Testament records the appointment of the first deacons in Acts 6 and lists their qualifications for office in 1 Timothy 3. As servants of the church, deacons have a unique role of coming alongside churchgoers at key times in their spiritual journey. Deacons have been assigned the following specific roles in coming alongside MET congregants at key times in their lives; as well they are all available for pastoral care.

  1. Newcomers – currently Sam and Rita Hill and Rod and Darlene Nickel are serving in this capacity.
  2. Evangelism – Respond to those who respond and want to receive Jesus Christ as their own personal Lord and Saviour. Currently, Rick Patch (lead), Murray and June Gibson, Cynthia Pohran, Rita Hill, Anne McGregor, Rodolfo Lee have all responded as willing to serve in this area.
  3. Baptism and Communion – The church ordinances are areas where servant leadership is required. It is important that those who qualify as deacons are the ones serving in this ministry. Right now, Shane and Marg Foreman are serving in the area of Baptism ministry. In addition Murray and June Gibson have also signed up to help the Foremans in this as well. Dave Saint is our deacon overseeing Communion at The MET. Those who have signed up to help Dave are Marilyn MacCormack, Rick Patch, Rod Nickel, Murray and June Gibson, Sam Hill, Shane Foreman, George and Shirley Borschewski.
  4. Membership – Marilyn MacCormack, Rick Patch, Cynthia Pohran, Sam Hill, Anne MacGregor, George Borschewski, Rodolfo Lee have all agreed to assist the elders in interviews.
  5. Discipleship – (Shepherds of Women) – Cynthia Pohran (lead), Marg Foreman (assistant); no deacon overseeing shepherding of men yet.
  6. Pastoral Care Team – Funeral Representatives, Grief Support, Prayers and anointing for healing – all deacons can make themselves available for this support of MET Care Ministries. Badges, identifying the deacon as a church representative have been made available for this and visitation.
  7. MET Care at Home - John Gowling (our key Shut-In Care provider) would be free to utilize any of the following deacons: George and Shirley Borschewski, Anne McGregor (Palliative), Sam Hill, Rita Hill, Rick Patch
